10 Basic Visa Rules

Here are 10 basic rules to remember and follow while you are on a student visa. Make sure you follow ALL U.S. visa regulations and your institution’s rules to avoid falling out of legal status.

  • Don’t arrive in the U.S. more than 30 days before your program start date.
  • Don’t remain in the U.S. past the 60-day grace period after completing your program.
  • Don’t skip classes or perform poorly—maintain full-time status and academic progress.
  • Don’t leave your program early without getting approval and completing the required withdrawal process.
  • Don’t fail to report address changes within 10 days—including those of any dependents.
  • Don’t drop below a full course load without prior written authorization.
  • Don’t let your I-20 form expire—if needed, request an extension well in advance of the end date.
  • Don’t transfer to another institution without prior notification to your current school.
  • Don’t work off-campus or begin any job (even on-campus) without prior approval.
  • Don’t leave the U.S. without getting your I-20 endorsed for re-entry, even for vacations or emergencies.
