Description

The International Undergraduate Pathway Program (Step UPP) at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) is aimed at preparing high school graduates for admission to U.S. research universities. Combining intensive English language training with academic coursework, the program facilitates a smooth transition into the American higher education system.

Structure:

  1. Summer English Academy: The journey begins with a six-week intensive English language training at UCSB’s English Academy. Classes are held four hours per day, four days a week, focusing on Academic Reading and Writing, Language and Culture, and Speaking and Pronunciation.
  2. Academic Year at UCSB: Following the summer session, students engage in three academic quarters at UCSB, enrolling in general education and academic preparation courses. This phase allows students to earn 28 transferable units applicable toward university admission requirements.
  3. Transfer to Santa Barbara City College (SBCC): After completing the UCSB coursework, students transition to SBCC to fulfill the remaining general education requirements. UCSB assists with the application process and collaborates with SBCC advisors to ensure a seamless transfer.
  4. Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG): Upon successful completion of the program and meeting specific criteria, students can apply for the TAG program, which offers guaranteed admission to UCSB. SBCC’s International Office provides guidance throughout this application process.

The Step UPP at UCSB offers a clear and supportive pathway for international students aiming to pursue higher education in the United States, combining language proficiency with academic preparedness to ensure success in a university setting.
